Digital Immersive Design for MRI observation

REMEDY (Research Exploring Motivational and Emotional Development in Youth) group at Florida International University

Key Achievements

  • Successfully prototyped and developed an immersive digital design to simulate real world scenarios of aversive stimuli & relief that can be deployed to participants under MRI observation to be used by researchers at Florida International University.

(Fun fact: I designed the researcher’s website!)

The Challenge

We worked together with REMEDY to find innovative solutions to simulating social pain via standardized tasks that can be deployed to participants under MRI observation. The researcher’s aimed to measure negative reinforcement learning rates by simulating real world scenarios.

Our Goal: Design a standardizable task in which participants experience social pain that they can learn how to escape.

What we did

  • Developed & tested sketch-level concepts for simulating aversive experience, relief, clarity, visual design and learnability of the task

  • Conducted user research and testing with students to generate feedback and ideas

  • Prototyped & piloted with young adults to refine and validate design direction
